Keeping fit is important when maintaining a healthy lifestyle but, if you’re anything like us, you occasionally feel that exercising can be a chore. Come summer however, it’s nice to mix up your exercise routine and head out into the fresh air to work up a sweat in the surrounds of the pretty Irish countryside.
So to give you a taster of the beautiful walks around us, read on for our pick of 3 great routes near Dublin this summer.
Bray to Greystones:
We’re lucky here in Ireland to live in a country with stunning coastlines. One of the most beautiful walks to undertake is the coast walk from Bray to Greystones. With breath-taking views along the way, the walk is also the perfect opportunity to explore the pretty sea-side town of Greystones. Home to popular culinary spot, The Happy Pear, we can think of nowhere better to spend a pleasant afternoon. And if you’re tired on the way home, the area is well-serviced by the DART, so you can just set out to walk one way and travel home by train.
Dun Laoghaire Promenade:
A truly family-friendly walk, the Dun Laoghaire Promenade has been a popular spot for Dubliners to get a blast of fresh seaside air since the 19th century. Nowadays a popular walk kicks off in the Forty Foot, where swimmers brave the bracing water of the Irish Sea. From the popular swimming spot, the walk curves along the coast as you stroll closer to the town-centre. With sailboats a regular sight around the bay, walkers can also spot friendly seals as they take a peek at the coastline. And if you want to sample a local delicacy, be sure to check out the legendary Teddy’s Ice Cream for a delicious post-walk treat.
Once home to St. Kevin, Glendalough is now one of Wicklow’s top tourist attractions. And it’s easy to see why this idyllic lakeside woodland is such a hit. Nestled in the heart of Wicklow, this glacial valley has trails suitable for every level of walker, so you can take your pick from a peaceful stroll to a more strenuous hike. Best of all however, is the eye-catching scenery. From cascading waterfalls to picturesque lakes, there are plenty of spots to stop and take a well-earned rest.
So what are you waiting for?! Lace up those shoes and get walking now...
