Buy the right brush
A harder brush may feel like it’s giving you a deeper clean, but soft bristles are actually better for your long-term dental health, as they have a less abrasive effect on the enamel which protects your teeth. Over time, a hard brush will damage this protective layer leaving your teeth more vulnerable to sensitivity and decay. An electric brush isn’t essential, but if you can afford the extra expense they do offer a more comprehensive clean.
Keep it in good condition
You should aim to replace your toothbrush every three months - or as soon as you notice that the bristles are becoming straggly and unkempt. Not only does this make sure you’re brushing at maximum efficiency, it also reduces the risk of injuring your mouth or gums. In order to minimise bacteria growth, make sure to wash your brush thoroughly with hot water after brushing, and allow it to air dry standing upright in a clean container before using it again.
Check your technique
Most people brush with a rapid back and forth motion, and in fact many people feel that they’re not cleaning correctly if they don’t apply enough pressure. On the contrary, this method is one of the main things that can lead to enamel erosion and gum problems. A gentler, circular motion is actually much more effective and ensures you won’t wear away the enamel which protects your teeth from damage. Brush slowly and carefully, covering each tooth with gentle circular motions, and make sure you’re working the bristles in and around the gaps in your teeth.
Don’t brush right after meals
This may seem like the strangest piece of advice on the list, but brushing right after meals is actually the worst possible time to do it. When you eat something it leaves acids in your mouth which softens the enamel, making it especially vulnerable to damage. Leave at least thirty minutes after meals before brushing. A simple rinse with water after eating is fine for clearing any morsels of food in your mouth.
Don’t forget to floss!
Your dental routine shouldn’t end when you put down your brush. Regular flossing is an element of dental hygiene which many people neglect. However it’s a crucial weapon in the fight against tooth decay, as it can get to places your tooth brush simply can’t reach. When flossing, draw the floss between the gaps in your teeth using a gentle sawing motion, making sure to use a different length of floss each time.
