Blog Homepage > Jet to the Sun! Our Top 3 European Summer Spots

13/06/17

We always have great expectations for our summer, but as with most years the Irish weather just isn’t willing to cooperate. So grab your passport and ready the suncream, as we outline some of our favourite European cities below that you can jet to in under 4 hours.

Barcelona, Park Güell, European city, Gaudí, Spain

Barcelona:

A cosmopolitan haven, Barcelona is home to some of the continent’s most striking architecture, from imposing churches to contemporary designs. In town for a few days? Take a stroll around the city-centre and drink in the sights, particularly all the striking work from Antoni Gaudí. Along with the cityscape, the markets in Barcelona are packed full of tasty food and local delicacies to discover and sample. In fact, locals value the markets so much they rank them as the second most valuable public resource, just behind libraries. Our top pick is La Boqueria. Located off the popular street, Las Ramblas, you can spend hours here strolling around the magnificent displays of colourful fruit and vegetables, fish and most notably - endless tapas offerings!

Rome, Trevi Fountain, Italy

Rome:

Want to visit a city where you can be surrounded by history and breathe in some of the past? Then Rome should be your top European destination. With historic sites from the Colosseum to the Pantheon to tour, you can find the perfect refuge from the summer heat in the city’s wide range of museums, where you can deepen your knowledge of Roman cultural heritage. For a panoramic view that you won’t forget, a trek up the Gianicolo hill will be rewarded with a picturesque scene above the Vatican and Trastevere area. And after a long day of sightseeing, you can treat yourself to the culinary wonders that Italy is famous for - pizza and gelato, rounded off with a strong espresso or glass of Italian wine.

Rome, Trevi Fountain, Italy

Amsterdam:

Summer is a wonderful time to visit Amsterdam and embrace the local culture of biking around the city. Rent a bike and set off on a trip around the canals, taking in the city’s signature narrow houses. With safe cycle lanes, you can sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city, before catching some rays during the afternoon in Vondelpark. And if you’re a culture vulture, Amsterdam has plenty to whet your appetite as well, including the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House.

We’re lucky to have fantastic food, history and culture just a short plane journey away so pack your bag, make sure your travel insurance is up to date and start an adventure today!
