Small checks* that make a big difference to your safety.
- Tyres: Make sure tread depth is at least 1.6 mm (3 mm is safer). Check pressure monthly, because cold air lowers it overnight.
- Battery: If it’s 4 + years old or your car is slow to start, have it tested. A weak battery is the top cause of winter breakdowns in Ireland.
- Fluids: Top up oil, coolant and winter-grade screen wash. These protect your engine and improve visibility in cold weather.
- Lights & wipers: Clean lenses, test bulbs and replace worn wipers. Good visibility keeps you safer on darker, wetter days.
- Brakes & safety systems: Listen for grinding or squeaks and watch for warning lights. Have a garage check brake pads and fluid before the cold sets in.

Helpful tip:
Many garages offer free winter checks: a quick visit can save time, stress and costly repairs later.
