Disability Benefit - Pre-Existing Conditions
If you have a pre-existing condition (as defined below), there is a waiting period of 5 years from the date you were accepted into the Scheme through automatic access before the Deferred Period as explained in the Scheme Summary Booklet can commence. Disability Benefit is payable at the end of the Deferred Period (provided the claim is admitted by the Insurer).
For the purposes of this Scheme pre-existing conditions are defined as: Any health condition, which existed in the 5 years prior to the date you were accepted into the Scheme, in respect of which you:
Pre-existing conditions are determined by the Insurer in consultation with their Chief Medical Officer after full and careful consideration of the medical history and available evidence. Any sick leave relating to a pre-existing condition will not be used in the calculation of the Deferred Period during the waiting period of 5 years from the date you were accepted into the Scheme.
The scheme provides a lump sum of typically twice your annual salary if you die. This can help to pay bills and unexpected costs, at an already difficult time.
It also provides the below benefits:
During the first 12 months’ of your membership, Death Benefit is only payable in the event of your accidental death (if your death is as a result of an accident) Terminal Illness Benefit is also not payable during the first 12 month period. After 12 months of membership, Death Benefit is payable in the normal manner as set out in Scheme Summary Booklet.
A once-off lump sum of 25% of your annual salary, less €5,000 will be paid if you are diagnosed with one of the Full Specified Illnesses covered.
Only one Full Specified Illness Benefit claim may be made per member and cover ceases. This benefit has a minimum once-off lump sum of €5,000. This means if a 25% Serious Illness Benefit payment were to equate to €5,000, the €5,000 deduction does not apply and the €5,000 minimum benefit will be paid.
For a full list of Specified Illnesses covered, and the policy definition/criteria of each illness, please see the Scheme Summary Booklet available here.
A once-off lump sum of €15,000 or 12.5% of your annual salary (whichever is less) if you are diagnosed with one of the less severe, but still life altering, illnesses covered. Only one claim may be made on Partial Payment Specified Illness Benefit per member.
For a full list of Additional Specified Illnesses covered, and the policy definition/criteria of each illness, please see the Scheme Summary Booklet available here.
An additional benefit of €15,000 if your child is diagnosed with a Specified Illness or €7,500 if your child is diagnosed with a Additional Specified Illness. This benefit ceases on your child’s 21st birthday. This benefit is payable once per member.
